BUFFALO, NY, November 15, 2013 – The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo’s William F. Thiel Fund is now accepting grant applications for the fund’s 2013 grant cycle. Applications are due December 16, 2013 and are available for submission through the Foundation’s website at

William F. Thiel was a long time philanthropist in the Wyoming County area. His generosity through monetary gifts to the hospital, fire departments, and other community organizations throughout Wyoming County was well known. He left a significant legacy to the County through the creation of the William F. Thiel Trust, a fund held by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

Since the fund’s establishment in 1974, the William F. Thiel Fund has awarded grants to programs that serve the health needs of the citizens of Wyoming County at his request, and today, has helped over 25 percent of county residents.
As a result of a recent Wyoming County Health Needs Assessment which identified the priority health issues for residents in Wyoming County, the Thiel Trust will provide funding preference to grant applicants that support health services programs, infrastructure to support delivery of health services, and increased availability of healthcare services.
Historically, approximately $300,000 has been awarded to Wyoming County organizations for each grant cycle. Mr. Thiel’s generosity continues to provide monetary supports and has most recently provided grants to Geneseo Migrant Center, Oak Orchard Health, Spectrum Human Services, Western New York Rural Area Health Education Center, and Wyoming County Community Hospital.

It is estimated that 10,800 Wyoming County residents (1 in 4) have benefited annually as a result of Mr. Thiel’s generosity and the Community Foundation’s approach to honoring his legacy.
