Buffalo Business First - November 14, 2014:

Western New York's largest foundations awarded grants totaling $105 million, with the M&T Bank Foundation ranking as the No. 1 grantmaker.

That's according to the Top Foundations list, a ranking of 30 foundations based in the eight-county region that made grants of $200,000 or more last year.

The foundations list is included along with the 2014 Million Dollar Nonprofits, both published Nov. 14 inside the All About Nonprofits special publication. The publication is included free this week for subscribers of Buffalo Business First.

M&T Bank Foundation was one of three foundations that awarded gifts and grants topping $10 million in 2013, followed by the John R. Oishei Foundation, $17.4 million; and the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, $11.6 million.

In terms of total assets, the largest foundation in the region is the Community Foundation, with $300 million, topping the Oishei Foundation's $279 million for the first time. Just two other foundations reported year-end assets of more than $100 million: The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, $141.4 million; and the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York, $122.6 million.

In total, the 30 foundations on the list had total assets of $1.5 billion. Each is listed with their three largest grants in the publication, which also includes a listing of nonprofit events and fundraisers for 2015.
