Internationally Acclaimed Opera Soprano, Angela Brown returned to Buffalo as featured presenter and partner for a Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative (CGLI) Success Looks Like Me® Role Model event with Buffalo Public School students on Thursday May 12, 2016.

Acting on the CGLI’s goal of creating access to new experiences for youth of color in Western New York, Ms. Brown performed and spoke to an audience of more than 400 Buffalo Public School students. During the program, Ms. Brown performed her popular one-woman-show entitled, “Opera from a Sistah’s Point of View,” along with traditional opera from the English, European and Russian schools that inspired the imaginations of children through Ms. Brown’s beautiful voice and lyrics.

The Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative’s (CGLI) Success Looks Like Me® Role Model Program partnered with General Motors Powertrain Tonawanda Engine Plant and the Buffalo Public School District for an event designed to introduce students to successful role models in the advanced manufacturing and automotive industry. To kick-off the event, students participated in a lunch-and-learn session and heard about a career option in the automotive industry that many aren’t aware exists – the medical field, with featured presenter, Dr. Winford A. Quick, Medical Director at the GM Tonawanda Engine Plant.

The lunch-and-learn was followed by an exclusive tour of the GM vehicle display at the 2016 Buffalo Auto Show led by GM Tonawanda Engine’s Global Supply Chain Director, Steve Clifford.


Success Looks Like Me® Role Model Project: STEM trip to GM Headquarters - October 2015

As part of the CGLI's Success Looks Like Me® Role Model Project, a group of high school girls from Buffalo Public Schools participated in another transformative trip to Detroit, Michigan to explore opportunities in the STEM field while touring the General Motors (GM) Headquarters.

Special thanks to our partners, GM Powertrain Tonawanda Engine Plant and the Buffalo Public Schools for making this experience possible.

The Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative’s (CGLI) “Success Looks Like Me®” Role Model Program presented Buffalo Public School students with access to career opportunities in the legal field through presentations with the Minority Bar Association of Western New York. The program introduced students to members of the minority legal community including lawyers, magistrates and judges. The presentation was also made available to students throughout the Buffalo Public Schools district via live video conferencing.

Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative’s (CGLI) “Success Looks Like Me®” Role Model Program and First Niagara Bank introduced students to the financial business sector through panel discussions and an in-depth tour of First Niagara's Headquarters. This collaboration introduced Hutch-Tech High School seniors to successful role models via a diverse panel of First Niagara Bank executives with backgrounds in human resources, marketing and community development. Students from Riverside Institute of Technology were also connected to this presentation via live video conferencing.

Demarre McGill, guest flutist for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) Happy Birthday, Mozart concert talked with students of the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts (BAVPA) as part of the CGLI's Success Looks Like Me® project. A winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, McGill has performed with numerous orchestral and chamber ensembles around the world. McGill's presentation was also streamed-live throughout the Buffalo Public School district where he shared stories of encouragement and his path to success.

General Motors design executives speak to automotive program students at Burgard High School about various career options and opportunities in the automobile and engineering fields. The presentation was also live-streamed to other students within the Buffalo Public Schools. The executives were in Buffalo from Detroit for the Buffalo Auto Show.

Mr. Steve Finch, General Manager of the GM Tonawanda Engine Plant, shared his story with 50 Buffalo Public Students. Students were then given on a tour of the plant. The presentation was live-streamed throughout the Buffalo Public School district encouraging student participation from remote schools.
