Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo

Community Goal: Enhance and leverage significant natural resources

The Buffalo Niagara region has a wealth of natural resources. These include the rich ecosystems and waterways shaped by a proximity to two Great Lakes, as well as a rich system of public green spaces that dates back to the Western New York's period of prosperity. The protection and enhancement of these natural assets are crucial to the revitalization of the area, yet there are limited resources devoted to the preservation and protection of the region’s environment. However, there are more than 150 organizations in the region working to protect and steward our natural resources to help them make the best use of resources to build a stronger system of support. The Community Foundation convened these organization and facilitated the creation of a Shared Agenda for Action to promote environmental change in our region and created the Western New York Environmental Alliance (WNYEA). The WNYEA is now its own 501(c)(3) organization with members from more than 100 environmental groups working together to ensure that the environment is a key factor in local and regional planning.
